Cultural Tidbits

Here are some quick facts regarding the P people:

  • They number approximately 11,000
  • They live scattered over an area of approximately 15,000 square miles on the plains
  • Their home turf is filled with rolling sand dunes, lakes, rivers, creeks, woods, palm groves, and large wide-open spaces
  • They have their own unique culture and beautiful language, as well as a perspective on life that is all their own
  • They are semi-nomadic and can pack up all their stuff and be on the move in no time at all
  • They are hunters and gatherers, eating lots of fish, turtles, iguanas, alligators, sting-rays, anteaters, deer, tapir, capybara and birds
  • They continue to use bows and arrows to hunt
  • They cook over an open fire on the ground and start them at times by rubbing two sticks together
  • They eat approximately 25 different seasonal roots, fruits, and seeds
  • Their “Home Depot” is the woods and palm groves. From what is found there, they make their own hammocks, baskets, mats, ax handles as well as their bows and arrows
  • Their grocery store is the creeks, rivers, and lakes as well as the plains and woods. This is where they get their food
  • Many of them have their villages up on sand dunes while some have built on the open plains
  • They live in houses made from palm…and as a rule, they don’t have walls but just low-hanging roofs because they love for the breeze to blow through their homes
  • They are a gentle and peace-loving people who really enjoy a good laugh
